Kate Milner joined the HumaniSea Team to illustrate our podcast. As she explained to us, she is "a teacher, librarian and mother of three who changed course in middle age to become an illustrator". We feel honored to receive her beautiful illustrations to accompany each episode of our podcast. Here is what she would like to share with you...

I am a teacher, librarian and mother of three who changed course in middle age to become an illustrator. In 2015 I was really keen to do something to help the refugee crisis caused by the Syrian civil war. It was important to me to stand against the poison and racism that effected the debate about refugees in my country so I made a picture book for children to give a calm, measured explanation of what it means to be a refugee.

The book asks questions like, Where would you brush your teeth or change you pants if you had to sleep on a train station platform? Or how would you feel about eating strange food? It’s about trying to create empathy with the refugee experience among children in host countries.

Since "My Name Is Not Refugee" was published it has been a pleasure to visit schools up and down the country and use it as a starting point to discuss these issues with children.
